We all need some good beach reads while we are enjoying a few days of freedom and sunshine. There is nothing better than to escape into a good beach read to distract you from the fact that you are due back in the office very soon. This time I picked some fictional crime and some whodunnits because sometimes we all need to take a step back from true crime.
Oyinkan Braithwaite: My Sister The Serial Killer
I picked this book up because of the cover (I just loved the artwork) and I was pleasantly surprised by the story, the storytelling, the humour and everything else about it. It was also a Sunday Times Bestseller, longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2019, shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2019 and the winner of the 2019 LA Times Award for Best Crime Thriller.
When Korede’s dinner is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, she knows what’s expected of her: bleach, rubber gloves, nerves of steel and a strong stomach. This’ll be the third boyfriend Ayoola’s dispatched in, quote, self-defence and the third mess that her lethal little sibling has left Korede to clear away. She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede’s long been in love with him, and isn’t prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other…

Anthony Horovitz: Magpie Murders
I’m not quite sure how I ended up with his book, but it was one of those I wanted to discuss with people but without giving away anything from the story. It has one of the best twists I’ve ever read and I didn’t expect it at all. So I don’t want to give away too much about the story, because it’s the best part of it, but if you don’t believe me that it’s a great book, take Stephen King’s word for it!
‘Want to read a great whodunnit? Anthony Horowitz has one for you: MAGPIE MURDERS. It’s as good as an Agatha Christie. Better, in some ways. Cleverer.’

Stephen King: Bill Hodges trilogy
Speaking about Stephen King, he can’t be missing from your summer reading list. If you haven’t read the Bill Hodges trilogy you are missing out. A retired detective, a mystery, some supernatural, a vicious killer… what else do you need for a good escape?

Dan Wells: John Cleaver series
A list wouldn’t be complete without a real serial killer story. John Cleaver is not your average teenager. He is working in his family’s mortuary and has an obsession with serial killers. He wants to be a good person, but fears he is a sociopath, and for years he has suppressed his dark side through a strict system of rules designed to mimic ‘normal’ behaviour. But all changes when a series of murders are happening in his town and he starts his own investigation…
There are 6 books in the series and I’m on book 3, so don’t spoil it for me if you get to the end before me!
